This year's College of Social Science outstanding alumna is Mrs.

- To Dean Croson, the Leadership Council, MSU trustees, faculty, staff, and other alumni present today, I would like to thank you for this extraordinary honor and privilege.
I accept this award on behalf of my mother, who was my energy, Lou Jean McLaughlin Jackson.
I am very honored to be here to celebrate your special day, because today is not about me.
Today is about all those proud parents, grandparents, family members and friends who are full of love, happiness, and pride to see their children graduate today.
Let's give your parents and grandparents a round of applause.
(audience applauding and cheering) Yes, today is not about me at all.
At all, it's about all of you.
Congratulations, class of 2018, go green!
(audience applauding and cheering) My gosh, over 40 years ago, I was one of you.
I was a young woman of modest means from Detroit, Michigan, and I was the first to graduate from college in my family.
And you know what?
I was scared to death, because I was so worried about payin' off my student loan.
I'm sure none of you feel that way today.
But I was excited, excited to graduate from Michigan State University.
That was my definition of success.
Soon after graduation, my definition of success was to get a job and pay off that student loan.
And I'm proud to say I paid it off, and so will you.
Keep the faith.
As I learned and experienced more, my definition of success changed.
I knew I wanted a career, not a job.
I wanted to be a leader and help others be the best they can be; I wanted to make a difference.
So after 40 years, I'd like to tell you all what I learned.
I have learned that leadership makes a difference, and I define leadership as the courage to shape a better future.
All of you today are the next generation of leadership, in your communities, in our country, and in the world.
Unlike me, it won't take you 40 years to realize you're a leader of yourself.
Today, you are embarking on a journey as the CEO of you.
I encourage you to choose wisely.
Choose wisely about how you behave, what you post online, what values you hold.
What is your brand?
What is your reputation?
And what are you known for?
Because it ultimately makes a difference.
And in the future, as you become leaders of others, ensure you have a vision and a strategy to make things better.
Listen to other ideas.
Be more predictable with your decision making, based on facts and analysis.
Role model your values, and above all else, do the right thing versus doin' things right.
As the head of human resources, ie, people solutions, in the Coca-Cola Company, I was responsible for 700 team members and over 60,000 employees.
There were many days I had to decide not what I could do, but what I should do.
As a Spartan, I believe in all of you, and that you will become amazing next-generation leaders.
Recently I read a quote, the future is sending back good wishes and waiting for all of you with open arms.
We are counting on you to write the next chapter of history, we are counting on you to have the courage to shape a better future.
And in closing I'd like to say one more thing: When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, remember, class of 2018, Spartans never retreat.
Spartans never surrender.
Spartans never give up.
What do Spartans do?
Spartans will!
Win!
Congratulations, class of 2018, and thank you for lettin' me be here with you.
(audience applauding and cheering) - Each year, the Colleges of Science Leadership Council also sponsors an award to recognize and honor one of the great teachers within this college.
Professor Helen Veit has been selected for this Outstanding Teaching Award.
Would Professor Veit please come to the podium?
(audience applauding) Helen Veit is a professor in the Department of History.
Her specialty is in the history of food in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.
So today, in celebration of the learning all the students gathered here have achieved, the College of Social Science Leadership Council is proud to present the 2018 Outstanding Teaching Award to Professor Helen Veit.
(audience applauding) - Hello, and thank you.
I am truly honored to be able to speak to you today, on what is justly one of the most celebratory days of your lives.
And I am going to say something that I would not say in mixed company.
But since it's just us, just us social scientists, I'm gonna tell you something that I have observed for a long time.
Which is that social scientists tend to be cool.
(audience laughing) And I don't mean that in the history-is-cool sense.
I truly mean it in the high school sense.
And I realize, students, that you may be thinking, I don't know, have you met my professor?
Wouldn't wanna hang out with him at a party.
Actually, I have met your professor, and he's amazing at parties.
I won't go into details, but I am completely serious.
People who do well in the social sciences are often pretty social themselves; i's not a coincidence.
Social scientists study a huge range of things.
We study how people vote, and how people spend money, and how people live in other cultures, and how people lived in the past, and a thousand other topics.
But for most of us, the common denominator is people.
Social scientists like thinking about people.
We are good at figuring out how people think, how they relate to each other, why they do what they do.
These are the basic skills of our disciplines.
They are also basic social skills.
And when they get deployed in daily life, they can translate into coolness.
Students, your coolness has given you all kinds of advantages.
But it also gives you special responsibility.
Because you have friends, because you have social influence, because many of you are natural leaders.
When you walk out of this very big room today, you will walk out as college graduates.
By the standards of our culture, that means that you will walk out as adults into the world.
And the world needs your help.
There are some very big problems on the horizon.
Nobody knows what's going to happen.
As a historian, the one thing I can say with certainty is that things have always changed.
They're going to continue to change, and they may change a whole lot in your lifetimes.
We need good people working to make sure those changes are good ones.
We need thoughtful, educated people with social influence, like you.
This kind of positive change-making is not easy.
It takes creativity, and tenacity, and more than anything else, struggle.
And I know, because you made it here today, that you already know how to struggle.
Because you've spent your whole lives as students.
And when you're a student, you have somebody standing over you and demanding that you struggle.
Demanding that you do things you don't always feel like doing, demanding that you try doing something new and then get good at it, demanding that you finish what you start.
The thing is, though, that starting today most of you are never going to be students again.
At least not officially.
You're not going to have a teacher standing over you and demanding that you struggle and learn and grow.
In fact, as an adult in the modern world, you are going to have a lot of forces pushing you in the opposite direction.
You've probably heard somebody say, in the old days, people had to make their own fun.
And that's true.
For most of human history, people didn't have Netflix, and people didn't have smartphones, and they didn't have even movies or books.
Today, we don't have to make our own fun, because there are whole industries devoted to making fun for us.
You will have to make your own struggle.
So listen up, social scientists.
You who really majored in people, whether you knew that or not, you who are a little cooler than average, please struggle not to spend your lives being distracted.
Please struggle to keep learning about important things, and then to talk about those things with all those people you know.
Most of all, please struggle to do meaningful things, even when they're hard.
I truly believe that doing all of that will make your life richer and make you happier.
But I'm not saying it for your sake.
I'm saying it because the world really does need you.
It is calling you.
Starting today, it will be up to you to go out and answer that call.
Congratulations, graduates, and thank you.
(audience applauding) - It is our tradition in the College of Social Science for seniors of the Dean's Student Advisory Council to select one of our graduating seniors to give a brief address.
This year's College of Social Science senior speaker is Breanna Escamilla.
(cheering) Breanna is graduating today with a bachelor's of arts degree in anthropology.
During her years here at MSU, Breanna has served as the undergraduate assistant for the Women of Color Initiatives, the undergraduate board member for the Dean's Advisory Board on Diversity and Inclusion for the College of Social Science, and as student librarian assistant at the MSU main library special collections.
Breanna has presented her research at other universities, national conferences, and at MSU.
She's a 2017 Moore Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In the fall, Breanna will begin an anthropology PhD program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Please join me in welcoming Breanna Escamilla.
(audience applauding and cheering) To family, friends, faculty, and alumni here today, thank you and welcome.
To my fellow Spartans in the College of Social Science and the Graduating Class of 2018, I'm glad this is one eight a.m.
we didn't miss.
Today is a day we have long waited for and it marks the end of a chapter in our lives that feels like we began writing only yesterday.
And so, before we leave here today to embark on a new chapter and newfound journeys, I want to take us back to the beginning of this one.
I want you to think back to move-in day your first year.
How did you feel?
What did you expect?
What were your dreams?
Now I want you to ask yourself: What are some of your favorite memories or stories from your time here at Michigan State University?
Is it the weekly movie nights with floor-mates turned best friends?
Is it the late-night study sessions at the library filled with pizza, laughter, and procrastination?
Is it the feeling of waking up early on a fall Saturday morning to the cheers of thousands of people?
And now I want you to think back to those moments when your circumstances, and deadlines, and life seemed insurmountable.
And I want you to think of those moments, the good, the bad, and everything in between, that have shaped your legacy at MSU and hold onto them.
Because while I do not know the story of every senior here today, I do know this: I have seen my classmates, friends, professors, and I have seen us encounter the impossible these last couple years, and I have seen us continuously and without doubt create anew in the classroom, through friendship, research, collaboration, and always as a community.
The challenges we have faced have shaped our journey through MSU and added depth to this chapter in our lives.
My fellow Spartans, we have grappled with being states, countries, and oceans away from home, as we carried the weight of taking classes to expand our understanding of the world around us and ourselves.
I have seen our MSU community organize around social and political issues at a local, state, and national level to incite change.
Because time and time again Spartans will rise to a challenge, whether it be personal, academic, political, or professional.
The trials and tribulations of our time at MSU is just another facet of the legacy we leave behind and continue to build upon in moving forward.
Today is more than a celebration, it is the recognition of everything we have overcome to get to here, to this final victory.
And so, as we leave here today I leave you with a final challenge: I challenge you to never forget that there is no obstacle, big or small, that you cannot overcome.
We, as Spartans, are leaders, innovators, creatives, scholars, practitioners, researchers, and ultimately, the authors of our own stories.
Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2018!
I wish you the best in continuing to challenge the present moment and create a better tomorrow, thank you.

(audience applauding and cheering) - An integral part of our ceremony is to acknowledge those who have played very significant roles in helping our graduates reach this important milestone.
Will the faculty and academic advisors stand to be recognized for their contributions to these graduates?
(audience applauding and cheering) Please be seated.
There is yet another group of individuals who have contributed greatly with their love, understanding, and support of the achievements we recognize in today's ceremony.
We ask that the parents, wives, husbands, significant others, children and brothers and sisters, all the members of the families and friends of the graduates, please rise and give us an opportunity to express our thanks.
(audience applauding and cheering) Please be seated.
We would like also to take a moment to honor all the veterans at this morning's ceremony.
Whether you're a student, a faculty member, or here in the audience, thank you for the sacrifices you have made, and for your dedicated service, United States.
(audience applauding and cheering) I now invite you all to join us in singing the first stanza of the alma mater, MSU Shadows, which you will find on your commencement program on page nine.
After the singing, we'll request that students and guests be seated and remain in their places, until after the recessional and the platform party and faculty.
