Providing Support for PBS.org
Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- We're at the MSU Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, Michigan, where we help artists share important stories about their world.
I'm gonna share one of those stories with you today.
We're standing in front of these sculptures by artist Chaikaia Booker.
While many works of art are made from art supplies, like paper, pencils, or paint, no materials are off limits.
Some artists turn to the world around them for supplies.
Look closely, what materials do you see?
These sculptures are made from found materials.
If you were to search for them, where might you find them?
The artist discovered these materials on the side of the road.
She gives discarded car tires a second life.
By cutting, twisting, drilling, bending, and attaching, she transforms these rubber treads into something new.
We might normally overlook things that are old or the objects that we're no longer using and just throw them away, but Chaikaia Booker reminds us that they are full of possibilities.
She says it's just limited to your own imagination.
Reusing the materials around you, use your creativity to make something new.
Thanks for joining us.
Your family can discover more art stories at the MSU Broad or at a museum near you.
