I bring you Wonney Jang.
(audience cheering) - Hi everyone.
Thank you, Dr. Chaison, for the introduction.
I'm going to preface this by saying I've never spoken to such a large crowd before, so I'm sweating tremendously, but anyways, hello and welcome to family, friends, esteemed faculty, staff, distinguished alumni, shout out to my dad and of course the MSU graduating class of 2022, we made it.
(audience cheering) I am honored, grateful and extremely terrified to be standing in front of all of you today.
I know we have a lot of names and stories to get through, so I'll do my best to keep my remarks short.
So when I first sat down to write this speech, I was headed in the direction of comparing, failing, defatting.
I didn't really know what I wanted to say.
And then I was like, maybe I shouldn't do that.
Like a lot of people told me not to do that.
(laughs) But it's an intimidating task to sum up each of our unique paths in just a few minutes.
Over the past few weeks, I've been asking my friends to reflect on what they've learned and what they're most proud of from their time at MSU and I wanted to share a few.
My classmate and friend, Olivia whom I'm very thankful that I grew close to over this past year shared to me that during her time at Michigan State she learned to stay true to herself.
She said to follow the things in life that actually bring you happiness.
My very first friend from the Interior Design Program, Brooklyn told me that she learned to not put limits on herself.
You are capable of more than you can imagine and you just have to trust in your abilities and go after your dreams.
For me, I learned to surround myself with people who I love.
Experiencing COVID during college taught me that our relationships with those around us can get you through anything.
Our relationships with our family, friends, professors, and peers are the ones that will get us through the good and hard times.
And on that note, I wanna apologize to my friends and family who watched me experience numerous quarter life crisis, because I thought I was going to be graduating unemployed.
Thankfully, that's not the case.
(Wonney laughs) I know there's absolutely no way to condense all of our experiences into a single narrative.
I can only hope that my speech today resonates with some of you and illuminates some kind of truth within your experience as well.
As we all know, completing our undergraduate degree was no small feat.
We experienced and witnessed a global pandemic, a presidential election, couch burnings, and tons of other major events that our kids will probably learn in a world history class one day.
And they're gonna ask us when we're 45, if we got COVID during college and I'm gonna be like, well, which one?
(Wonney laughs) Well, today might be a beautiful shining milestone and end to four years of life, growth, and hard work, I hope that we can also take the time to celebrate all that went wrong that brought us to this point.
Let's celebrate the victories, but also the failures from the last four years.
Whether it's the exams we bond, the job applications and Tinder matches that ghosted us or the classes we didn't make it to because we were at Dublin the night before.
We're going to continue to fail over the course of our lives.
I can only hope that we all continue to fail and learn new lessons with the intention of growing to become a better version of ourselves.
If you weren't listening to anything I was saying before, just know this, it does work out.
I mean, we're all here graduating today.
So take a moment to breathe and be happy because we are all going to be just fine.
Plans will change and we will be fine.
Decisions will have to be made and we will be fine.
Embrace the changes that are soon coming.
Keep an open mind and just be positive because we only get one life.
So to the graduating class of 2022, I applaud you for making it this far.
I know it wasn't easy and I encourage you to take time to reflect on what it took to get you here but I also hope you know the best is yet to come and our journeys are just beginning.
And with that being said, thank you all, congratulations and go green.
- [Students] Go green.
(audience cheering) - Thank you, Wonney.
Your encouraging words are true to the Spartan spirit.
Being open to pursue new experiences, embracing change, and keeping out open mind are core to the curriculum for you and your peers.
Now that you have completed again, thank you.

(audience cheering) - Could I ask all of our students, all of our graduates to please stand.
Congratulations to the newest members of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni.
(audience cheering) Students, please be seated And students thank you so much for staying and celebrating.
This is a big day, and it's just really wonderful to see all of you here with us, especially after you walked across the platform.
This is a profound, deeply meaningful moment for each of you and for the loved ones who are celebrating with you.
Some of you may be the first in your family to receive a baccalaureate degree.
Others are joining a line of Spartans or other college graduates.
Either way, commencement is an occasion that always reminds me of the central and unassailable place of undergraduate education in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources here at Michigan State University.
There is no greater good that we can do in the academy than to mentor and to develop those who will forge our future.
You are our future.
We are relying on all of you and we are excited to see where you will take all of us.
The college of agriculture and natural resources is grateful to you, our students, for your leadership and character that you've shown throughout your time here at Michigan State University.
You represent the best of the university and make this Spartan proud to call you a fellow alumni.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, I want you to know how exceedingly proud we are of each one of you and how privileged we are to have you among our outstanding alumni.
Former MSU President, John Hannah made this tribute to each graduating class.
Up until this moment, each of you has had a slowly growing and evolving relationship with Michigan State University.
With the conferring of your degree today, that relationship is permanent.
You and MSU are forever joined.
Please join me in congratulating the class of 2022.
(all applauding) Before closing, I'd like to recognize those that are most important to our graduates.
Those who have loved and supported them long before they ever came to Michigan State University.
I asked that the parents, grandparents, caregivers, spouses, significant others, children, siblings, and close friends, all members of the immediate families of our graduates to stand and give us the opportunity to our express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your continued support.
Please stand.
(all applauding) You may be seated.
The faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources share your interest with these graduates.
Their contributions to the achievements of our graduates are not only essential, they are the source of great pride for all of us.
The faculty and staff in the College of Ag and Natural Resources are among the best in the world.
I ask that the representatives of the faculty and the staff stand and accept our gratitude for your contributions.
Please stand.
(all applauding) You may be seated.
The many details of planning tonight's celebration from the letter of instructions to graduates to the distribution of honor courts to the choreography from processional to the dismissal of the graduates are the responsibility the office of Academic and Student Affairs.
Please join me in thanking Mr. Stratton Lee who's at the back there for coordinating this wonderful ceremony.
Thank you, Stratton.
(audience cheering) I'd also like to acknowledge all of the additional administrative staff and hosts who are also key in making this celebration so phenomenal.
Thank you to all of the staff that were a part of this as well.
(all applauding) As we wrap things up, I'd ask that you would please join us in singing the first stanza of the Alma Mater MSU Shadows.
The lyrics are available on the jumbotron.
The MSU symphony band conducted by Robert Abend will accompany us at the conclusion of MSU shadows.
We request that our guests remain seated until the recessional of the platform party and our faculty.
Our new graduates will sing the fight song to close out tonight's celebration.
Graduates, please remain in your seats until the ushers signal you.
Thank you again for this fantastic celebration on this very joyful occasion.
Congratulations class of 2022, Go Green.
(audience cheering) (gentle music) (orchestral music)
