Class of 2022, you'll be joining a large and impressive group of graduates from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.
We are the first college of communication in the nation, and our students and alumni make it the very best.
(audience applauding) Tonight you become alumni of the college, joining over 56,000 others worldwide.
Like those before you, you will leave a unique mark on this campus.
This is a day you will never forget, the day you put on the green robe and graduated from MSU.
Whether you're graduating with a degree from the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, where are you?
Ooh.
(audience cheering) Or the very small and mighty Communicative Sciences and Disorders.
(claps) (audience cheering) Department of Communication.
(audience cheering) Media and Information.
(audience cheering) And the School of Journalism.
(audience cheering) Congratulations on what you have accomplished.
We really believe in you.
You will achieve great things in the years to come.
Now please direct your attention to the screen as we take a look back at your time at MSU and showcase some of the most memorable moments.
(upbeat music) (singers vocalizing) (fireworks crackling) (audience applauding) Lately we have heard a lot about GOATs, greatest of all time.
We are inspired and in awe of people who perform at a very high level many times.
Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Katie Ledecky the swimmer, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Michael Phelps, and lately we've heard a lot about Coach K, although we have a coach who is pretty GOAT himself.
(audience applauding) While most people would be happy to experience their one shining moment just once in a lifetime, it is remarkable that these individuals have reached the pinnacle many times in their lives.
We are inspired, motivated, and challenged by people who do these amazing things.
So on this important day, as you graduate from MSU as proud Spartans, perhaps that's the inspiration you need to accomplish great things.
We hope you'll become the very best in your chosen profession, that you'll become a GOAT.
If you set your goal so high, failure is inevitable.
Without the agony of defeat, there is no ecstasy of victory.
And you'll soon realize that greatness is not all about winning.
It's about dealing with adversity and learning from failures, whether they are small or monumental.
Let's take Simone Biles, who's considered a GOAT in gymnastics.
Leading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics the rest of the field was just competing for silver and bronze.
Many thought that Biles had a lock on the gold medal.
But the moment she landed in Tokyo for her gold medal campaign, everything sputtered.
For inexplicable reasons, Biles lost her form.
Biles held herself with dignity, cheered on her teammates from the stands, and dealt with adversity as the world watched.
She finished with one silver and bronze and didn't compete in many events in which she was favored to win.
A similar fate struck Mikaela Shiffrin, a Winter Olympian in the recent Beijing Games.
The greatest technical skater of all time did not finish the three events in which she was favored to win, and left the Games without a medal.
It was a crushing loss.
Shiffrin struggled to explain her struggles at the Olympics, but her vulnerability and authenticity in handling disappointment earned her legions of fans.
So as you set high goals, be prepared for failure and loss.
How you handle adversity will determine your greatness.
But I've thought a lot about greatness these days, over the past two years, especially as we've been through the pandemic.
And what does it mean to be truly great?
I believe true greatness lies neither in victory nor in defeat, but in the spaces in between.
Greatness is about how you choose to live life with joy, purpose, meaning every ordinary day.
This is particularly relevant as we emerge from the pandemic.
Preliminary reports suggest that about a third of the students have endured major challenges.
Economic hardship, loss of a loved one, caregiving stress, loss of community, inability to thrive and flourish, anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
This is not limited to our students.
All of us are dealing with some of these challenges in our lives.
So greatness, what is it?
Greatness requires the realization that we need help.
It is about the willingness to ask for help when we need it.
It is also in offering help to someone in need.
It is finding joy in the mundane things.
A quiet walk, listening to your favorite music, reading a book.
Yes, I said book.
You're wondering what it is, but it really does exist.
And finding time for solitude and reflection.
Without taking time to cultivate physical, mental, and emotional habits and without self-reflection, you can lose out on true greatness.
So think of life as a garden.
If you don't maintain it, weeds take over and it becomes a mess.
But if you do attend to it thoughtfully and intentionally, it will flourish and blossom.
So friends as you venture out, strive to make every day special instead of waiting for the special days to arrive.
Instead of greatest of all time, how about the kindest of all time, or the classiest of all time, or the nicest of all time?
And strive to take care of one another.
Life is lived at its fullest when it's lived within a community.
So congratulations and best wishes, ComArtSci Class of 2022.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) So speaking of community, let's celebrate your community, your team of ardent fans who have stood beside you in your highs and lows.
They are here today to cheer you on.
So on this special day, let's thank your family and friends who are here today.

It is now my pleasure to introduce Regan Holgate.
(audience cheering) A journalism senior who will speak on behalf of the Class of 2022.
Regan.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) - Hi everyone.
For those of you who didn't just hear, my name is Regan Holgate.
And I'm truly honored to be here in front of all of you today.
You know, it was kind of funny, yesterday in rehearsal all I kept thinking in my mind is who in their right mind let me do this.
Why did you choose me?
And actually it was three of the professors here behind me.
So if this goes south, we know who to blame.
You know, I feel like everyone always asks, "How did we get here?"
But what I want to know is, how did you get here?
Just think about it for a second.
You came to college with your own goals in mind.
But even with the inevitable bumps in the road, you persevered, you didn't let anyone else or anything else defer you from what you set out to do.
And for that I say congratulations to you.
Come on, come on.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) I know the path to get here wasn't easy, but soak in this moment and be proud of the person sitting in these seats today.
Back in high school, I was that kid senior year who dug her head in the sand.
And yes, I'm stealing that quote directly from my mother because I still hear about it today, even though I'm graduating college.
And I think I will hear about it for the next 25 years.
But honestly, she was right.
I really didn't want to think about college or what my future had in store.
To me college would magically happen without me having to make any big life-altering decisions.
And let me tell you, that wasn't the case.
When I think about why I was so hesitant to take that move and leap forward with my life, maybe it was fear, or nerves, or the thought of leaving home.
But I realize now it was the fear of the unknown.
Making the decision to come to Michigan State, or honestly just college in general, I was terrified by it all.
By saying all of this, I want to acknowledge that I understand the future can be scary.
You may not know where you'll be next year or even next week.
but it shouldn't be fear that's holding you back.
My parents have always told me to fight for what I believe in and put 110% effort into everything I do.
I'm not sure I would be standing here today in front of all of you if it weren't for them.
Change is scary, but it doesn't have to be.
Why is it that we see fear as such a negative thing that weighs us down?
Fear should motivate us in life to get better and keep moving forward.
Ever heard of the saying, fail forward?
Don't be afraid of failure.
It only makes us stronger and more resilient.
Isn't that what these four years are supposed to teach us, how to knock ourselves down and pick ourselves back up?
Well, yeah, and I've had to tell myself this a lot this year, and so have my family and friends.
But even if it's hard to believe in the moment, everything happens for a reason.
At the beginning of the year I was asked to speak on a panel to the incoming journalism class.
I was asked what the number one piece of advice is I wish I would've had as a freshman.
Here's what mine was.
I know it's hard not to compare yourself to those around you and focus on what everyone else is doing, but I urge you to focus on yourself.
You are uniquely different from the person sitting next to you.
All of you here today have exceptional qualities.
So why spend the time focusing on others when you can focus on yourself and continue to better who you are?
This was hard for me to learn.
We're entering such a competitive period of our lives, so how can we not default to what other people are doing?
Coincidentally enough, I wear a bracelet every day with three simple words on it, "Prove them wrong."
And I know you're like, "Oh, she's probably full of it," but I'm actually not.
I'm wearing it here today.
I wouldn't lie to you, not this time.
It serves as a reminder for me to continue following my path and not only showing everyone around me, but showing myself what I'm truly capable of.
We've experienced some truly unimaginable things in our college careers.
Who would've thought halfway through sophomore year the phrases global pandemic, or social distancing, or mask mandates would become a part of our everyday conversations.
And can we talk about the fact that the bars were closed for a year and a half?
(audience laughing) I mean a girl turns 21, what is she supposed to do?
Come on, can I hear something?
Yeah.
(laughs) (audience cheering) (audience applauding) But I think we made up for lost time, right?
I'm seeing some subtle head nods so we can just leave it at that.
No more details needed.
You know, I don't want to focus on the negative aspects of my years here, but I would be lying to you if I said my path to today was a walk in the park.
I don't say this looking for sympathy.
I say it because I want you all to know that no matter what, you are capable of so much more than you know.
Never in a million years did I think I would be spending my senior year driving to and from home to testify in court about my own sexual assault.
Trying to finish out the best years of my life reliving one of the worst moments in my life is one of the hardest things I will ever do.
But I'm standing here today to show you what is possible, even in your darkest times.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) Through all the tears and challenging conversations, I've used this as a reason to keep moving forward and continue fighting for what's right.
Everyone always says that you come to college to learn and grow into the person you want to become.
But no one ever said that amid that growth you will also encounter such huge setbacks.
But no matter the mistakes you've made, or those you will inevitably make in the future, I urge you to continue to find that light, whatever it may be.
It wouldn't be right of me to get through this entire speech without acknowledging and thanking the people who helped me get to this point.
The professors in this college are truly unmatched.
Yeah, come on, give it to 'em.
(audience applauding) They're right behind me, come on.
And I know I'm biased, but I would not be where I am today without the individuals who have taken me under their wing and mentored me during my time as a Spartan.
I hope each and every one of you had the opportunity to connect and build those same lasting relationships at Michigan State.
It's not just the professors though, but all of you.
Learning and growing alongside of you has been a true honor.
I've met some of my best friends through this school and made connections that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, the end of this speech.
Here we go.
(laughs) If there is one thing that Michigan State has taught me, your future isn't set in stone.
And that's okay.
You will continue to face people and challenges in life that try and alter your direction.
But stand strong in who you are and what you set out to do.
You can forge your own path, and that starts here today.
Whatever your future holds might be scary right now.
But if there's something I know for certain, we are Spartans, and Spartans will.
Thank you so much.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding) - Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Regan.
