We gather today while being mindful that our community is still mourning the violence our community experienced on February the 13th.
It may feel uncomfortable to celebrate while that occasion still consumes so much of our thoughts and feelings.
We are dedicated to supporting everyone who was impacted by this event, including the students who were injured, witnesses to the violence, and families of those who were injured or passed.
As we begin to sift to a celebration of your accomplishments, let us pause for a moment of silence to consider how we can live our lives in a way that honors all Spartans, including those who are no longer with us.
Thank you.
Please be seated.
(audience murmurs) Today marks an important milestone in your education, and we share your pride as we celebrate your achievement.
Next year, many of you will begin your year-long teaching internship, others have selected to enter graduate school, and some of you will embark on your first career experience.
Never have the fields of education and kinesiology been so exciting and challenging.
Your education has prepared you to meet these challenges and to view them as opportunities for making a difference in the lives of others.
The past several years have brought challenges that no one could have foreseen.
We have learned to be adaptable in ever-changing situations.
We have learned new technologies and new ways to learn.
We have learned how to care for one another.
And most importantly, we have learned that Spartans are resilient.
That is evident in the fact that we are all gathered here today to celebrate this incredible milestone you have all achieved.
We are confident as you move to the next stage of your lives that you will hold to what you have learned and bring honor to yourself and Michigan State.
This weekend and next, 16 Michigan State University colleges honor nearly 10,000 students who are graduating this spring or summer.
(audience claps and cheers) The College of Education students comprise a significant part of the student body at Michigan State.
However, each of you is, each of you is important to this institution in ways that transcend the size of your graduating class.
We honor and celebrate your commitment, determination, and accomplishment.
This year we have selected two students to offer remarks on behalf of the class of 2023.
I would like to first introduce DeLaney Heckman, a kinesiology student from Allegan, Michigan.
After graduation, she plans to apply to graduate school to become a physician's assistant.
(audience claps and cheers) - Thank you, Dean Jackson.
Good evening, fellow graduates, faculty, family, and friends.
I would first like to start by congratulating every 2023 MSU graduate, first and foremost for the accomplishment we celebrate today, but also for all of the small victories along the way.
Moving in and out of your freshman year dorm, figuring out which dining hall had the best food, making a friend or two, cramming for midterms and finals, your first 3:00 AM wrap from Conrad's, and, of course, passing your classes too.
Although some of our college experience may have been drastically different than anticipated, or considered untraditional, we are still sitting in these seats today.
To say our class is resilient is an understatement.
COVID-19 changed what some of us thought was going to be a year full of new experiences to one full of continuously adapting to virtual learning and praying that our professors weren't quite sure how Zoom worked.
This year alone has been difficult and filled with trying times for every MSU student.
The event that took place on campus affected not only us, but our entire Spartan community.
As Spartans, we come back stronger, and we're healing together as a community.
Spartans are family, and if it wasn't before, it has been made even more evident throughout this school year.
Well, not everyone's path may have been straight and narrow.
You may have switched your major once, or twice, or three times.
Well, you get the gist.
But what is important is that every single one of your individualized journeys led you to this moment today.
I am a prime example of this.
I started as a kinesiology major, switched to elementary education, and then finally landed back on kinesiology.
Clearly, I really love the College of Education.
(audience laughs) (laughs) I chose kinesiology because the possibilities with this degree are truly endless.
It can open so many doors, some that you didn't even know existed.
Kinesiology was the best fit for me in reaching my future aspiration of becoming a physician's assistant, and I could not have asked for a better university, faculty, or peers to have shared my educational journey with.
The College of Education is full of students and faculty that strive to help others, and this is something I greatly admire.
As very-soon-to-be-graduates of the College of Education, you should be extremely proud to be one of those individuals.
As a Spartan, you made countless choices, big, exhaustive choices such as your major, your living arrangements, and work experiences, but also smaller ones such as prioritizing school, even if it meant missing a "Bachelor" watch party, Honky Tonk Tuesday, or game day Rama at The Riv.
We are a diverse group of individuals with distinct goals.
Whether your major is education, special education, or kinesiology, you have been provided with a high-level education to leave your own indelible mark on this world.
We all do have at least one thing in common, that being, we all chose to be Spartans.
We found that this school was the best fit for us.
That this school on the banks of the Red Cedar that proudly embraces the colors green and white was where we all wanted to call home for four years.
If I could offer one piece of advice to the 2023 class, it would be to trust in yourself and your abilities.
If you have not yet, find your purpose, and if you feel you already have, embrace it.
Here you have been given the tools to do amazing things, so go do them.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
Be proud of your accomplishments.
Soak all of this in.
This is a super important moment that marks another milestone in your lives, and it should not be taken lightly.
I'd like to extend a huge thank you to all MSU students, MSU staff, family, friends, and community members for guiding and believing our aspirations with grace.
Truly, each of our successes would not be possible without every single one of you.
I'd also like to specifically thank my family for answering my every day FaceTime calls and always believing in me.
I would not be where I am today without you.
In closing, Spartans are ambitious.
Spartans are innovative.
Spartans are courageous.
Spartans change the future.
And lastly, Spartans will.
Congratulations on this achievement, and I hope every single one of us will continue to represent this institution with the pride it deserves while striving to make each day a good day and helping someone along the way.
Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.
Go green.
(audience claps and cheers) - Thank you, DeLaney.
Our second speaker is Kara Rider, an education major from Dexter, Michigan.
Next year she will be doing her student teaching internship here in Lansing, in the Lansing area.
(audience claps and cheers) - Welcome graduates, family, friends, and faculty.
My name is Kara Rider, and I am a future elementary school teacher.
I came from a family who are Spartans through and through.
Maybe some of you, too, collected photos of yourself as a child wearing Spartan memorabilia to proudly pair with announcements that you'd be shouting, "Go green," for the rest of your life.
Maybe others chose Michigan State University to be the school where the first college graduate of anyone in their family got their degree.
Others still may have chosen MSU out of a lineup of hundreds of other colleges because you believed that it would have something in store for you.
Whatever your story is of how you got here, our stories, while they remain distinct, start to merge upon being at at MSU.
Four years ago, I stepped onto campus with an excitement unlike any other.
I had a dream of becoming a teacher, a love for the stunning greenery all across campus, and a fervent craving for MSU Dairy's ice cream.
I attended as many campus events as I could, made friends on my dorm floor, and explored every cafeteria campus had to offer, and there's a lot.
Four years ago, when I stepped onto campus, I had never heard the phrase "unprecedented times."
I had never questioned my safety in a school, never witnessed a civil rights movement firsthand, never encountered a worldwide pandemic that would shut everyone I knew into their homes for months on end.
I didn't know what Zoom was.
I had never attended a vigil.
I can't say the same anymore.
For the duration of our college career, we have watched our world morph, and shape, and twist while our brains did the exact same thing.
While we studied to be the best version of ourselves, the world's version of normalcy altered around us.
We studied hard, and we partied hard.
We laughed until we cried, and cried until we laughed.
We collected memories like one collects sand from vacation, packed tightly into small bottles because you know you'll want to remember how sweet life was when you experienced it there.
As we gathered in Spartan Stadium on Saturdays, so also we gathered in protest on the capitol lawn.
As we sang about fighting with a vim, so also we faced virtual learning.
We passed classes and passed sickness.
We sought good grades, praying for a better future.
We bought textbooks only to turn around and write texts of "I love you" before it was too late.
We saw pandemic, and presidents, and precedents, and protest.
They say knowledge is power, but only when you have the power to actually do something.
When I reflect on what I thought college would look like, I see a girl who is curious, but now before you is a woman who is strong.
Beside you are people who have overcome, between academics and athletics, tears and fear, bumps and bruises, classes and COVID, college has certainly been something I never dreamed it would be.
It taught us resilience, how to face impossible situations head-on and still succeed.
It taught us to mourn, how to honor those we've lost, and embrace one another fully.
College taught us the importance of connection, of friendship, and time together.
It taught us the power we have when we learn to use our voices.
It taught us to embrace normal and still strive for excellence.
It taught us to make the most of what we have.
Classroom lectures and football Saturdays are not forever.
College brought us memories, and friends, and colleagues, and mentors beyond our expectations, brought community to rally with on our darkest days.
Michigan State University is more than a place.
It's more than an institution.
It's a home and a launching pad, and will forevermore represent the part of our lives where we became something more than just our individual self.
College may not have been what we thought, but it's presented opportunities beyond our imagination.
We dreamed about what these past four years would look like.
Let's continue to dream about what the future holds.
Congratulations, class of 2023.
(audience claps and cheers) - Thank you, Kara.

(audience claps and cheers) (audience members shout and laugh) (audience claps and cheers) - College of Education faculty members share in our celebration of these graduates.
The faculty's contributions to their success have been essential, and are a source of great pride to us.
College of Education faculty members are deeply committed to contributing to their professions through research, service, and the preparation of future leaders.
The reputation of our college's faculty and programs has again been recognized within the recent release of the 2023 edition of the "U.S. News & World Report" rankings of graduate programs.
For the 29th consecutive year, our graduate programs in elementary and secondary education have been ranked number one in the nation.
(audience claps and cheers) In total, nine programs are currently ranked in the annual publications of top programs and specialties.
We hope you share our pride in these rankings.
They reflect the dedication of our faculty, the quality of our programs, the support of our dedicated staff, and the achievements of our students and graduates.
I hope you will appreciate the value added to your baccalaureate degree because it was earned at an internationally prestigious university and a college of education with a consistently strong reputation.
Now it is fitting that I ask those representing the faculty to rise and accept our gratitude for their contributions to the education of our graduates.
We appreciate your fine work.
(audience clapping and cheering) There's another group of individuals who have made important contributions to the success of our graduates.
Our advisors have guided and supported these graduates from summer orientation through our commencement ceremony today.
They have answered questions, solved problems.
They have been a source of encouragement when expectations seemed overwhelming or the right path was hard to find.
They have cheered our graduates on as they developed from new freshmen on their first, for their first time on campus to young adults ready to take their place in the world.
They have also assisted with our ceremony today.
I asked the College of Education advisors to rise and be recognized for their important work.
(audience clapping and cheering) And there's yet another important group of individuals who have contributed love, understanding, and support, emotional as well as financial, as they share in the achievements we recognize today.
Accordingly, we ask the families of the graduates to rise and give us an opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation.
(audience clapping and cheering) I also thank our readers, Mike Bashore and Jamie Paisley, and a special thanks to Robin Lenkart for helping to coordinate this event.
(audience claps and cheers) Finally, the College of Education Alumni Board of Directors wishes to congratulate each of you.
We are confident that you take with you new perspectives and innovative ideas that will shape the society of tomorrow and contribute in meaningful ways to the learning and wellbeing of others, and we want to hear all about it.
Let us know where life takes you via email, social media, or the alumni website, and we will celebrate with you.
Please consider donating your time and talents to the college.
The college's alumni board of directors facilitates connections between alumni and our current students through events, outreach, and scholarships.
We look forward to learning more about your interest and engaging with you in the future.
I now invite all of you who can join singing the Alma Mater "MSU Shadows."
We will be accompanied by the MSU Symphony Band and Landon Black.
Guests may meet their graduates upstairs.
