I'd like to welcome everyone to this very special ceremony, where we pay tribute to those who have successfully completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree in engineering, to alumni, faculty and friends receiving special recognition for their outstanding career achievements.
This is a joyous but solemn occasion.
Out of respect for those speaking and those being recognized, I ask you to hold your applause and celebration until the end of each segment of the program.
You're also reminded to please silence your cell phones.
I also request that when we get to the recognition of individual graduates, you remain in your seats to hear the names of all the students crossing our stage today.
We are pleased to have with us today the honorable Brianna T. Scott of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.
I'd like to give her a moment to share her welcome and to introduce any fellow trustees.
Trustee Scott.
(audience applauds) - Thank you, Dean Kempel.
On behalf of the MSU Board of Trustees, I welcome all graduates, family and friends who are with us at this afternoon's undergraduate commencement.
Under the Michigan Constitution, the board of trustees is the governing body of the university by whose authority degrees are awarded.
Today's ceremony represents a culmination of discipline, intellectual work, and creative imagination, certainly no small accomplishment.
For many of you and your families here today, the sacrifices have been long and great.
The degree that you've earned acknowledges your success and honors those who have encouraged it.
Our wish is that you will always be leaders who generously use your intelligence and your knowledge to improve the quality of life for your community, to advance the common good and to renew hope in the human spirit.
Our faculty, the administrators, and the MSU Board of Trustees are all very proud of you.
Please accept our warmest congratulations and best wishes.
(audience applauds) - Thank you, Trustee Scott.
I would like to now ask a member of the 2024 graduating class to reflect on her engineering undergraduate experience.
I'm pleased to announce, to introduce Ms. Ashlin Riggs, computational data science graduate, who was selected by the faculty and the engineering student council to provide the student address.
Ashlin's from Saline, Michigan, and would like to thank her parents, David and Melissa Riggs, as well as the rest of her family for supporting her here today.
Ashlin.
(audience cheers) - Thank you, Dean Kempel.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to my fellow graduates, our faculty, distinguished guests, visiting family and Trustee Scott from our board of trustees.
Thank you all for your attendance today and for supporting our spring 2024 class.
Now, let me slip into something a little more comfortable.
I must start today with an obligatory go green.
- Go white.
- Go white.
- As I stand here and stare at the next generation of Spartan Engineers, I see the builders, keepers and leaders of our future society.
Like me, I am sure several of you received cards from your grandparents, aunts and uncles inscribed with "I remember when you graduated from kindergarten.
Time flies," and, like me, I am sure you are finally beginning to understand exactly how quickly time does fly when you are having fun.
Now, as Spartan Engineers, I'm sure that many of us have a different definition of fun compared to most other students, however, as we reflect back on our time at Michigan State on our Saturday morning tailgates, our midnight screams, our Spartans runs, we can agree that it was a pretty good time.
Speaking of time, many of us in our green gowns today were born in the 21st century, the new millennium.
Today, life is longer than ever before.
Several of you seated in front of me will live to be centenarians, living to be over 100 years old.
That is several generations contained in one lifetime, but when we look back on how quickly these last four some odd years have flown by, perhaps 100 years really is not so long after all.
I do not say this to trigger a collective panic attack, but to remind us of the very real impacts of our time at MSU.
Many of us have job offers, grad school offers or at least a faint idea of what we will do for work after we leave this building today.
Many of us know what we will be when we grow up, Spartan Engineers of course, but besides what we want to be, what do we want our legacies to be?
Do we want to be leaders?
Do we want to be mentors, titans of our industries perhaps?
Do we want to be what so many others have been for us on our unique paths to graduation today?
Spartans, our paths toward these futures begin today.
An ancient Roman emperor, long forgotten to most of us in this room, although perhaps not to the history students who graduated yesterday, once said, "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be, be one."
I invite you all to reflect on your freshman year once again.
As we look back, we realize how different many of us in this room are from our past selves.
One of my favorite phrases, to be loved is to be transformed, resonates with me strongly.
Many of us found true love, true friendship, true mentorship here at state.
The people closest to us have shaped our lives in ways we will not be able to fully appreciate or understand until long after we leave the Breslin today.
However, nothing in life is an accident.
We as Spartan Engineers have made several calculated decisions to end up in this room today.
Perhaps we chose to join Lego Robotics Club in elementary school, and that triggered a love of mechanics, perhaps we chose Science Olympiad and AP calculus over soccer and French.
Myself, I overheard a teacher saying that only six female students had enrolled in my high school's AP Computer Science course.
I changed my next year's schedule that very day.
Four years, perhaps four new groups of friends, perhaps four new majors, may we reflect again.
Time flies when you are having fun.
None of us in this room remained stagnant for our four years here in East Lansing.
We have grown as students, as friends, as sons and daughters and as Spartans, and whether we knew it or not, that was always the plan.
We did not stumble upon our caps and gowns today.
We were chosen because we represent what it means to be a Spartan.
We are resilient, savvy, intelligent, and we get results, period.
Take what you have accomplished here and use it as fuel for your next steps.
Know that with what you have accomplished here in these four short, long, blink of an eye, long as a lifetime years, you are prepared for greatness.
With a little work, a little motivation, a little support from your fellow Spartans, you will be exactly what you want to be when you grow up because growing up does not stop when you cross that stage today, and time will never stop flying as long as you're having fun.
Go green.
- Go white.
(audience cheers) - Thank you, Ashlin, for your thoughtful comments on behalf of all engineering graduates.
Turning to our award and recognition part of the program, we begin with the Claud R. Erickson Distinguished Alumnus Award.
This award is given annually to a graduate of the College of Engineering who has attained the highest level of professional accomplishment, provided distinguished and meritorious service to the college and the engineering profession, and engaged in voluntary service at the local, state, national or international level.
The award is named for Claude Erickson who received four engineering degrees from MSU, beginning with the Bachelor of Science in 1922.
He also qualified to study, he studied law and was qualified to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Continuing in the same spirit which Claude lived his life, we gather here today to honor another distinguished alumna and add her to the list of those the college holds forth as examples for our graduates.
I'm pleased to introduce Cindy Westerhof, chair of the engineering alumni board who will introduce this year's recipient.
Cindy.
(audience applauds) - Thank you, Leo.
As the chair of the College of Engineering Alumni Board, it is my distinct honor and privilege to congratulate the upcoming, all of you graduates, and welcome you to the alumni family.
We are so proud of your accomplishments and look forward to your continued contact with the college and with MSU.
It is now my pleasure to introduce the recipient of the 2024 Claude R. Erickson Distinguished Alumni Award, Rachel S. Hutter.
(audience applauds) Rachel is the EVP and head of studio operations for the Walt Disney Studios.
She's a licensed professional engineer and certified safety professional.
She graduated from MSU with a degree in electrical engineering and a concentration in theater, so it's very fitting that she is where she is today.
After serving in roles at the VA, General Motors, General Mills, and Rockwell Automation, Rachel joined Disney in 1997.
She has worked in many different roles throughout Disney, including being part of the team that built and opened Animal Kingdom, yay, leading the teams responsible for ensuring the safety, operability and maintainability of Disney resorts around the world and designing and patenting a ride safety system used worldwide at Disney.
Rachel is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and speaks regularly about the importance of women in STEM.
She has maintained a strong and continued involvement with the MSU College of Engineering, and we look forward to many more years of the same.
Please congratulate my friend, Rachel.
(audience applauds) - Dean Kempel, esteemed faculty, proud parents, and a few short minutes from now, Spartan Engineers.
(Rachel applauds) (audience applauds) Congratulations.
A little over three decades ago, I was on the receiving end of an MSU commencement address.
Excited, yet vaguely terrified that someone would realize I've forgotten a class and couldn't really graduate, but I did graduate totally legit because I'm certain Leo had someone look that up before allowing me to speak.
And, class of 2024, I also wanna put your mind at ease about one other thing.
As a licensed engineer with experience in many diverse sectors, I can assure you that if, like me, you never really understood electromagnetic fields and waves, you can still have a great and satisfying career.
(audience laughs) Now, all the electrical engineers over there are giving me the stink eye, probably wondering how on earth I'm worthy to be your commencement speaker, especially since there are so many proud MSU alumni longing to share wisdom with you.
They have a point.
Countless people hold more patents and have more grants and white papers than I, but there is one thing I do better than anyone I know, and the older I get, the more I realize that it's more important than patents and white papers.
I love my job.
I don't mean the proud to have the title, can afford a nice house kind of love my job, I mean, well, you know the observation that no one ever says on their deathbed, "I wish I'd spent more time at work," I probably will, and while I love my family to the moon and back, not one of them will be surprised.
They know I'm that kind of engineer.
I love being an engineer.
I love the engineer mindset that tolerates opinion, but values fact.
We write our crudos on the truth of an XY-axis.
Engineers are problem solvers, and Spartan Engineers know that the problems most worth solving live at the intersection of goodwill and scientific knowledge.
That's because of something we rarely admit but all know, we yearn, all of us, for the great quest.
Money, celebrity, social media stardom, those aren't the kind of quests I'm talking.
I'm talking Luke harnessing the force to protect the resistance, Sulley, to find convention to power Monstropolis with laughter rather than screams, the Avengers, chasing the infinity stones across time and space to save humanity, Jojo Rabbit, denouncing the propaganda of hate and inspiring others to do the same, Jake and Neytiri, rallying the people and animals of Pandora to protect their world.
I'm sorry, I get carried away.
As I said, I love my job.
And these movies fire our imagination because each of those heroes use knowledge, passion, and creativity to help the world.
That is the greatest quest.
Spartan Engineers require that.
We are all heroes at heart.
Today I harness Spartan engineering power to bring the hero's journey to people around the world.
Disney has understood for 100 years that innovation lives at the intersection of creativity and technology, and I still see it every day in the storytelling worlds of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Searchlight and 20th Century.
When I lived in Holden Hall, I had a four by eight sheet of plywood leaned up against the wall.
On one side I'd painted scenes from the Disney classic animated stories.
On the other side, I painted logos of all the major film studios.
When I was burning the midnight oil, that sheet of plywood was a tangible, touchable reminder of what I hoped to do with my degree.
I wasn't the only one.
A friend of mine studying agricultural engineering wanted to work for John Deere.
To keep him on quest, he kept a little matchbox tractor in his pocket.
Now that I think about it, his inspirational talisman was considerably more portable than mine.
No matter, finding that dream job is a highly personal quest.
Sulley couldn't have stopped Thanos, and the Avengers didn't save Monstropolis.
Finding your quest is a lifelong mission.
It isn't taught in a classroom, and there isn't a map.
Still, as the saying goes, when you know, you know.
Now, for those of you who do know, I would love to say that your dream and this degree are all you need to steer clear of every possible disappointment, mistake, and moment of discouragement.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.
I've had all three in abundance, yet now that I can view these episodes as flashbacks instead of foreshadowing, I can tell you that they're necessary parts of the journey.
One of the most obscure classes I took at MSU was an elective called fantasy as theology.
In it we read Peter S. Beagle's classic, "The Last Unicorn," and he had this declaration, which I remember to this day, "Great heroes need great sorrows and burdens or half their greatness goes unnoticed.
It's all part of the fairytale."
This class of 2024 has faced heartbreaking and unfair sorrows.
You lost classmates forever because of gun violence, you have shouldered colossal burdens, you were robbed of some of the joy of togetherness and collaboration due to COVID, and the polarization of society has attempted to take from you the curiosity and optimism that comes from listening thoughtfully to views other than your own.
All these things are part of it, part of the quest that has readied you to be heroes.
My advice as you continue your quest is this, lean into what's special about being a Spartan Engineer.
I would not be in this job that I love if not for fellow Spartans.
Case in point, when I first considered MSU, I lived in Chicago.
Out-of-state tuition was going to be staggering.
I also had the very real alternative of attending a military academy.
Let's pause just a moment to let all of the parents here think about that.
Door number one, your kid goes to a fantastic school and burns through all the money you had set aside for that lakehouse.
Door number two, your kid goes someplace most families cannot even dream about, is guaranteed a good job after graduation, and it's free.
Tuition fees, textbooks, room board, clothing, the works.
I was pretty sure I knew which way my dad was leaning.
Yet our first visit to MSU was magical.
The moment I set foot on campus, I knew this is where I would thrive.
I was born to be a Spartan.
To my amazement, my parents felt the same way.
My dad told me later that as I wandered the campus, students stopped at every turn to ask if they needed help or directions.
He said, "People are so helpful here.
I know that if you go here, people will look out for you."
They did.
They still do.
Being an engineer can open just about any door for you.
Having the spirit of a Spartan will get you a seat at the table.
I'm often asked how I planned my career, and the truth is there was no complex Machiavellian plan.
Today I have this ridiculously amazing dream job overwhelmingly because of one thing, fundamental Spartan helpfulness.
There were always problems others struggled with that my technical education allowed me to tackle.
That led to being invited to solve different and larger problems.
If I ever feel myself getting frustrated, I remind myself that this is part of the journey that I have chosen.
Now, this may not be what you expect to hear at the end of a celebratory speech, but I wish you lots of problems.
I want problems to present themselves to you, and I want you to seek them out because I know you have the skills and positivity to solve them.
Happily ever after comes later, for now, may you embark upon a quest of your own choosing, one packed with challenges and fulfillment.
Michigan State College of Engineering class of 2024 go be forever the heroes you have trained to be.
Go green.
- Go white.
- [Rachel] Thank you and congratulations.
(audience cheers) - Thank you, Rachel.
We're proud of your accomplishments as an outstanding Spartan Engineer, but as the person who teaches that electromagnetics fields class, I wanna remind you Luke has no light saber without fields.

(audience cheers) (air horn honking) (audience cheers) - Congratulations to all of our graduates.
(applauds) (audience cheers) There's a large group of individuals who have contributed with their love, their understanding, and their financial support to the achievements that we recognize today.
Accordingly, we ask all members of the immediate families of the graduates to rise and give all of us an opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation.
(applauds) (audience cheers) Thank you.
I'd like to introduce a very important group of people who've had the ultimate responsibility for the education that you have received.
Would the representatives of the faculty of the College of Engineering rise and accept our gratitude?
(Leo applauds) (audience cheers) Please join us in singing the alma mater, MSU Shadows.
The MSU symphony band conducted by Benjamin Horn will accompany us.
(bright orchestral music) (audience cheers) Please be seated.
I'd like to thank Linda Kernohan and Jamie Paisley of WKAR Radio for reading the graduates names.
Thank you.
(audience applauds) I'd also like to thank Andrea Cleaver for providing a real time captioning of today's ceremony.
(audience applauds) Please remain seated while the platform party and the faculty leave the arena.
Once the platform party has left, please remain in your seats for one additional special number from the MSU symphony band in honor of our graduates.
After the recessional, families and friends may meet the graduate on the ground level.
To our graduates, we're extremely proud of all of you completing your work here today.
We know that you'll accomplish great deeds in the future, and we want to hear from you often.
The best to all of you, and go green.
- Go white.
(audience cheers) (upbeat orchestral music) - [Conductor] Five song.
Let's get right into it.
