Before we begin the well deserved recognition of our graduates, there are several people I'd like to recognize.
First, I would like to welcome the Honorable Trustee, Brianna Scott.
(audience clapping) From the Board of Trustees, and thank her for participating in our ceremony today.
I'd also like to thank our name card readers from WKAR Scott Paul and Mark Bashore.

Thank you to you all.
(audience clapping) This year, the College of Natural Science Student Advisory Council has selected Libby Hill as the spring commencement speaker.
Libby is a member of the Honors College and will be earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Neuroscience and an additional major in criminal justice.
She is originally from Waterville, Ohio and is a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.
An active volunteer, Libby works at the Center for Survivors and His Healing Hands clinic and was the recipient of the Spartan Volunteer Service Award in January, 2022.
She also received the Corre Anding Stegall National Collegiate Leadership Award and has been on the Dean's List every semester.
Libby has also participated in research, working in the Clinical PsychoPhysiology Lab since March, 2021.
Dr. Laura Simmons, faculty member in the Neuroscience Program, shares Libby distinguish herself in an online Neuroscience writing course I taught this past summer when COVID interrupted our plans to travel to Italy on an education abroad program.
Getting to know Libby has been incredibly gratifying, her intelligence, enthusiasm, and can do attitude truly represent our Spartan students.
Libby is looking to pursue medical school and will be applying next year, hoping to matriculate in the fall of 2023.
During her gap year, Libby will be working as a medical scribe in Sparrow's Emergency Department, as well as continuing her volunteer work at the Center for Survivors and the His Healing Hands Clinic.
Welcome Libby.
(audience clapping) - Okay, hello everyone.
Wow, it is such an honor to be standing in front of you all today, you all look amazing, but so I'm gonna get started, this is amazing.
The human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons, which is about the same number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy as well as the same number of squirrels, I see around campus each day.
Of these neurons, 300 million reside in the occipital lobe and are responsible for our visual perception.
Throughout our time here at Michigan State University, we have used those occipital lobes to admire Spartan Stadium, striped in green and white, as well as to watch the sunset in front of Spartan Statue.
Right now, you're using it to see a sea of Spartan green worn ever so well by your peers, as we celebrate our undergraduate journey.
The temporal lobe functions to process auditory information such as the chime of the 49 bells in Beaumont Tower, the steady flow of the Red Cedar River and the Spartan Marching Band play our beloved fight song.
Right now, you're using it to listen to me speak and soon you'll be using it to hear your name called as you walk across this stage.
The purpose of the parietal lobe is to process somatosensory information from the body.
This includes the brisk Michigan winds, we all know those as fall turns into winter, maybe a little more than brisk sometimes as well as the smooth glass of the beakers we used way back in chem, 161.
Right now you can feel the bleachers on your back as you prepare to stand to receive your diploma.
Last, but certainly not least the frontal lobe is important for managing higher level executive functioning and cognitive skills, such as the capacity to plan, organize and control one's response to achieve a specific goal.
From finding the correct classroom freshman year to eventually passing biochemistry, we all have numerous smaller skill goals to celebrate, as we achieve such a large one today, graduating from Michigan State University, as we reflect on our undergraduate career, I feel inclined to mention the hippocampus, which is where all of these memories have been consolidated.
After today, you might not know the next time you'll be in East Lansing or the next time you'll get to wear the iconic green and white, but your memories of Michigan state will always be with you.
The experiences you've had here in undergrad will follow you into your next endeavors, wherever that is, they may take you.
You'll always be a Spartan, and I think that is something to be incredibly proud of.
I feel as though gratitude is nearly impossible to convey just by word of mouth, especially for when it is for those that mean the most, whether it be about what I should cook for dinner, mac and cheese every night, or how the heck I'm gonna afford medical school, nothing has been more comforting these last four years than hearing my mom say, "We'll figure it out, Libby."
For that, I'm eternally grateful.
I'm also so thankful for your endless support, love and advice, even when I felt like I didn't need it.
I love you the most mama.
Thank you, thank you.
(audience cheering) Thank you.
Also thank you to my beautiful Grandma Bow up there for being my best friend, instilling such strong faith in me and showing me how to overcome all odds, even when they're all stacked against you.
Lastly, wouldn't it be a speech without thanking my little brothers, my peers, my professors, my mentors, my family, and all of my friends here today.
All of you have played such an incredibly crucial role in my life and I truly cannot thank you enough.
Congratulations to the class of 2022 and go green forever.
(audience cheering) - Thank you, Libby, that was wonderful.
At this time, I would like to invite you to enjoy a special musical arrangement provided by the MSU Wind Symphony under the direction of Cody Edgerton.
(slow paced instrumental music) (audience cheering) Thank you very rousing rendition there.
Now the Honorable Trustee, Brianna Scott, who is from Michigan, the Muskegon Michigan will greet the graduates and their guests.
(audience clapping) - Thank you, Dean Duxbury.

Chan School of Public Health and is representing the College of Natural Science Alumni Association.
(audience clapping) - Thank you, Dean Duxbury members of the faculty and congratulations class of 2022.
I am honored to have this moment to talk to with you here today.
As I was reflecting on what I wanted to talk about, the thought of combat books kept on coming up in my mind.
Maybe it's after watching Dr.
Strange yesterday, and I know many of you guys have that on your list to do this weekend, but I'm a Marvel fan, DC's okay, but they're still getting their act together.
My favorite movies and comic books have been around the characters origin stories.
These origin stories speak to how the characters came to be.
As I thought about my Spartan origin story, as a kid from Maryland, with immigrant parents from the Caribbean, I thought about my vision statement, which has all the elements of how I came to be.
My personal vision statement is to exhaust my talents as a nexus for change through my blessings, failures and community.
Just let's hear that to exhaust my talents as a nexus for change through my blessings, failures in community.
This statement gives you an idea of what I'm trying to do and speaks to the elements of my origin story.
So let's break that last part down, blessings, failures and community.
Blessings, or we can call it opportunities, you are here today, you are graduating from one of the premier colleges at Michigan State.
I'm a little biased as an alum, but you are here like, congratulations.
You have been given lots of opportunities from the friendships you have fostered to the scholarships, internships, and jobs and special programs that help provide a foundation for you.
I'm blessed to be a Charles Drew Science scholar, shout-out to all my Drew scholars out there and to Dr. Caldwell, the Program Director and have some fantastic professors that really invested in me and saw my potential.
Many of them are actually right in front of me and may not even know the role they had in my life.
And these are the opportunities that became my Spartan helmet in my origin story.
In every origin story, there are the struggles that the character faces that define them.
Those are the times the character experience failure.
Failure, we don't often like to talk about during our journey.
Those are the times we took that first chemistry and biology exam and question why we were even here.
I know I'm not alone out here on stage right now, but we all questioned it for a moment.
For me, my failures became some of my best mentors and provided me guidance throughout my life.
They helped me to sharpen my craft.
My mother would always say, it's only a failure if you learn nothing from it.
Failures are just moments, we fell down, but we know as Spartans, we always get back up.
So my failures were my Spartan sword and my origin story.
Your commute is everything in an origin story.
The people, the character meets provide them with purpose, comfort, and support.
These are your family members, your friends, your mentors, and professors.
Many of them were there after you took that first chemistry and biology exam and were the shoulders that comforted you.
The ones you first called when you passed that exam, got that internship, they celebrated with you and many of them are here today, and I know they are so proud of you.
From this day, you join a massive community of Spartans from all across the world.
My community is my Spartan shield in my origin story.
Short story, after I got accepted to Harvard University for my doctoral program, I went to the student, admitted its day, and I'm walking around Cambridge, Massachusetts, unsure if this is where I belong.
The imposter syndrome is high, like the imposter syndrome will follow you sometimes throughout your career as a whole.
And I'm asking for a sign from the universe, is this the place for me?
Do I belong here?
I am of course, wearing my Spartan fleece, I'm repping MSU everywhere I go, so I'm wearing all my green and white and across the way as I'm thinking and contemplating my choices, in the distance, I hear someone across the street yell, and I do not make this up, they yell out, "Go green."
And of course, every Spartan knows our automatic response, when we hear go green is to say, go white.
Thank you, that was my sign, Spartans are everywhere encouraging you.
As I conclude, I'd mentioned in my statement, there's also this hope for the future.
In my case, to exhaust my talents as a nexus for change.
I want to leave you with my mantra that has encouraged me to take my Spartan story forward.
My mantra is to be hungry, be curious, and be humble.
Be hungry to solve the challenges in this complex and rapidly changing world.
We need you to have that relentless passion for change.
Be curious and advance in your given field, thinking outside the box and even questioning, why is their box even to begin with.
Be humble, knowing that you need a coalition of people to make the change for a more just, inclusive and equitable society.
The Spartans were known not just for their individual prowess, but their teamwork.
So as you reflect on your story and the Spartan helmet, sword, and shield that you've been given, remember be hungry, be curious and be humble, and most importantly, always remember Spartans will.
And with that, I end with go green.
- [Graduands] Go white.
- [Buckley] Thank you.
(audience clapping) - Thank you, Dr. Buckley for that rousing speech and thank you to the College of Natural Science Alumni Board for your choice.
Are you ready?
(graduands cheering) - Okay, will class of 2022 from the College of Natural Science, please rise.

(audience cheering) You are now MSU alumni.
(audience cheering) We will now present token diplomas to the new graduates.
I will be accompanied making these presentations by Heidi Purdy, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic and Student Affairs.
I ask that the new graduates be escorted to the stage to receive a token diploma.
