Hi, I'm Janellyn, and today, I'm with Rita Brown.
Rita, tell me what you do and where we are.
- I am a construction industry consultant and we are at the Union Carpenters and Millwrights Skilled Trades Training Center in Detroit.
- What do you do as a construction industry consultant?
- I take all of my experience in the construction industry and I apply it to making our companies stronger, faster, smarter, so that we can incorporate some of the new things that are coming up.
- How is STEM incorporated in your work in construction?
- It's incorporated in every single facet of what we do.
We're calculating loads, we're trying to make sure steel fits together.
We don't do the building, we do the drawings, we do the 3D models, and we do everything from small shops, to stadiums, and hospitals, and bridges.
So STEM's pretty universal.
- What happens at training centers like this?
- These are state-of-the-art facilities where students can get hands-on opportunities for both commercial and industrial constructability.
That's essential for you to get an understanding about how to work within your craft.
- What types of careers are there in construction?
- There are so many careers in construction.
Everything from architects to engineers, to skilled trades professionals, carpenters, the millwrights, the laborers.
- Are there a lot of women who work in construction?
- There are not a lot of women that work in construction, but there should be a lot more.
And there are more engineers who are women graduating than ever before.
- What's the most rewarding part of working in the construction field?
- Other than occasionally meeting people like you?
Being able to connect with colleagues and people who are actually doing the hard work to build our country, because that's what construction's about.
It's about building the infrastructure, building the buildings that we all as a community need.
- Rita Brown helped build my knowledge of careers in construction.
