Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship("Pomp and Circumstance") (audience cheering) (audience applauding) - [Presenter] Ladies and gentlemen, the President of Michigan State University, Samuel L. Stanley Jr. (audience applauding) - Good morning.
On behalf of Michigan State University and all of us here with me, welcome to the spring 2022 master's degree commencement ceremony.
(audience applauding) I'm pleased we can be together here at the site of so many other Spartan triumphs to celebrate this milestone accomplishment for our master's degree earners.
I'd like to begin by congratulating the class of 2022.
You made it!
(audience cheering) And we're so proud of all of your many accomplishments and contributions to the Spartan community and beyond.
You form an accomplished and diverse group of scholars representing 34 countries and 47 states and range in age from 21 to 72.
(audience cheering) 50 of you are veterans and thank you for your service.
(audience cheering) A great university and a world-class education result from the efforts of many dedicated people, and as I think our graduates would agree, their families and friends have been a big part of their success through their love and support.
As important members of Team MSU, will our Spartan families and friends please rise as they are able to accept our appreciation?
(audience applauding) The contributions of MSU's faculty and staff are essential to the achievements of our graduates and a source of great pride to us.
Let us also show our appreciation to them, to our faculty and staff.
(audience applauding) Commencement is truly a special day and a wonderful opportunity to be in community with one another.
As I look out at our graduates, I'm reminded that students have always been important partners in fulfilling Michigan State's commitment to generating new knowledge and applying it in practical ways to build a better future.
This is especially so for our master's students who take such an important role in instruction and research.
Graduates, we university leaders, faculty, and staff members gain inspiration and energy from your drive and pride from your accomplishments.
Pursuing an advanced degree demands many special personal qualities, intelligence certainly, but also originality and no small amount of hard work among them.
I congratulate all of you on having developed and demonstrated such valuable attributes, which I know with your advanced degrees will serve you well.
So let's celebrate this joyful occasion with our colleagues, family, and friends.
We now ask our guests to join students and faculty in rising as you are able and singing one stanza of "The Star-Spangled Banner" performed by the MSU Wind Symphony under the direction of Professor Kevin Sedatole.
The singing will be led by Phoenix Miranda, a junior in music performance.

Thank you for the kind introduction and the invitation to speak here today.
Graduates, parents, family, friends, and faculty, I'm honored to celebrate this very special occasion with you.
And graduates, congratulations on your tremendous accomplishment.
As the pandemic began to wind down in our country, at Carhartt, we started to think about what's next and are we ready for it.
Our creative team built this story around fit for the next frontier because we felt we were moving into a new undiscovered world.
The pandemic had changed focus and priorities for our consumers and our employees, and we were being asked to pioneer and see things with fresh eyes.
As a workwear company, we wanted to continue to foster workforce development for all hardworking people, but we had to acknowledge that work was gonna look very different in the future and that the skillsets and perspectives of those doing it would evolve as well.
Today, I'd like to apply that same lens to all of you.
Are you fit for the next frontier?
The points I share with you today are broader than work skills because we recognize that the whole person comes to work.
That we bring all our personal strengths and weaknesses and life experiences to every situation we encounter, and being ready for that next frontier means being ready to seize the next opportunity and move onward.
Are you ready to meet your next goal?
How will you get there?
What's your next best step?
Are you prepared to start a new job, to start a family, to move across the country or the world for an opportunity?
So you get the idea.
There's lots of readiness assessment in your future.
A new frontier requires fresh perspectives and new ways to act.
Articulating your values and initiating change can be formidable.
The example that I bring to you from Carhartt around clarifying values and sharing new perspectives is centered around our brand purpose, which is build a better world with all hardworking people.
And we intentionally added that word all when talking about hardworking people because we live and work in a global society, and we wanted our internal focus and external messaging to reflect the diversity of jobs and the diversity of the people doing the work.
We strove to exemplify hard work across all ethnicities and all types of people, a Black urban farmer, a Hispanic utility lineman, a plus-sized woman who's a wind farm engineer, a Haitian immigrant woman who's now a master plumber in New York City.
We broadened the way we and hopefully the rest of America view hard work and who's doing it in our country.
Honoring hard work and all of the people in America doing that work felt like it could be a unifying call to action.
Because if you believe in the American heritage and ethos that respects people that work hard for a better life for themself and their families, then you'll support more opportunities for all people to be embraced in the workforce.
My challenge to you graduates is for you to look for ways to clarify and demonstrate your values and to drive change when and where needed in this new frontier.
That may seem a little bold or unrealistic as many of you are just beginning new careers.
However, this pandemic, it's caused a reset and created this openness to new perspectives that didn't exist two years ago.
I've been asked several times just over the last few months if I ever felt in my career that I wasn't skilled or qualified to get the job done or not able to master the position I was given, and the current term to describe that feeling is imposter syndrome.
But honestly, those of us that have worked for a long time recognize it simply as a fear of not being successful, a lack of confidence when you're asked to do something that pushes the boundaries of what you can do well.
So everyone experiences it.
Finding a technique to move past it is something you need to develop.
For me, one of the things I do is talk to myself, basically coach myself up.
There's been many days that I've given myself a good pep talk out loud in my car on the way to the office or shut the door to my office and practiced a conversation out loud before a difficult conflict discussion that I knew I needed to initiate.
In fact, you should have heard me talking to myself this morning before I got here to give this speech.
(audience laughing) You will always find yourself in challenging and uncomfortable situations, and you need to find your own way to move past it, to speak up, to not avoid that situation that puts that pit in your stomach when you're uncertain about an outcome, but you have to push through it and know it's an experience that's gonna make you bolder and build that action muscle, whether you succeed or not the first time you try it.
I'm convinced that the new frontier will present many of these challenging moments.
So please take advantage of this new openness to listen, find your voice, and create positive change.
My next point revolves around community.
All of us have been influenced by a community, your family, your friends, your classmates, your neighborhood, and most recently for you, your Michigan State community, which influenced you and supported you in your goal to earn your degree.
As you leave Michigan State, I would encourage you to stay a part of our Spartan community.
I am 40 years past my graduation date from MSU, and I still enjoy finding another Spartan when I travel the world.
Heck, our club even has a not-so-secret password.
Let's demonstrate.
Go green.
- [Audience] Go white.
- Exactly.
Do you know how much fun it is?
And sometimes, you know how comforting that can be to hear that familiar exchange when you're traveling in Asia or Amsterdam.
It just makes you smile.
There are 500,000-plus Spartan alumni out there waiting to connect with you.
It's pretty awesome to be part of this inclusive, not exclusive, club that is MSU.
I hope you continue to be Spartans for life and benefit from our global community for career opportunities as well as personal friendships.
And just as you've connected to a community here at MSU, there are other communities waiting for you to engage with, be inspired by, and influence.
Building a connection to community can inspire you to redirect your focus outward, to be more generous, to be more kind, to be creative, and it can be a source of pride in collective work done well.
Most importantly, being connected to community means that you aren't going it alone.
That someone's hand is there to lift you up when needed, and your hand is there for them as well.
We've experienced so much social isolation in the pandemic.
In this new frontier, we need to reconnect and recapture a sense of community.
Lastly, it may seem a given, but I want to talk about protecting your mental, emotional, and physical health because it's really paramount to thriving in the world and being fit for the demanding next frontier.
When the pandemic struck, you had to figure out a new relationship with downtime.
Out of this forced seclusion, maybe you found the time for more self-discovery to gain clarity about what you really enjoy doing.
Maybe you also figured out a better balance of how to be productive, but not so much so that you burn yourself out.
A survey of younger generations during the pandemic indicated that the majority agreed with this statement.
I'm enjoying a slower pace of life that I would like to keep even after the pandemic is over.
Okay, so now family and the audience is thinking, what is this commencement speaker doing?
Telling everyone to take it easy before they even start at their new careers.
But the jobs you're gonna do and the way you're gonna do them are very different.
You have more options to define how and where you're gonna live and work.
You've been given more time for yourself.
Don't squander it.
Pre-pandemic, most Americans ranked having more time as a number one desire, and we have so many studies that state younger generations value time and experiences more than money.
Use this time and greater freedom that you've been permanently gifted in this new frontier with a new way of working to focus on your physical and mental health.
Trust me, it's something I've learned the hard way over a 40-year career.
We all have that inclination to focus first on the pressing matter at hand, the stressful situation we find ourselves in, and deprioritize our own wellbeing when free time's limited.
Not paying attention to the need to get outside and clear your mind and decompress can be harmful.
Again, I urge you wisely to use this gift of time to afford yourself a better work/life balance.
But understand that with that greater freedom and flexibility that employers and organizations are trusting you to demonstrate emotional intelligence.
You must show you have the ability to manage your emotions in positive ways, to self-regulate, to relieve stress, and to communicate effectively and respectfully with others.
Allocating time to ensure physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing is critical to being fit for the next frontier.
That's my advice for you today.
It's a call to clarify and act upon your values, to find and use your voice for good, to connect with community, and to safeguard and nurture your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
I encourage all of you to take that relentless drive that pushed you through these last years and harness that power to truly make a difference.
During your time here at Michigan State, you've gained knowledge.
You've gained empathy, courage, and confidence to become the strong leaders that the world needs, leaders who are fit for the next frontier.
Congratulations, graduates.
Thank you.
